SILVICS OF PRECOMMERCIAL THINNING

OBJECTIVES: This module is designed to provide the student with an understanding of the purpose and operability range of precommercial thinning as a silvicultural treatment. The objectives, site requirements and variability and the various benefits of this precommercial treatment as a silvicultural technique will be examined.

PREREQUISITES:

• Module 1. INTRO TO SPACING SAWS AND PERSONAL SAFETY GEAR
• Module 2. INTRO TO MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS
• Module 3. GENERAL PREPARATIONS FOR WORK
• Module 4. INTRO TO FELLING TECHNIQUES

• Intro to Silvicultural Techniques and Precommercial Thinning.
• Objectives of Precommercial Thinning
• Site Requirements and Variability
• Results of Precommercial Thinning

STUDENT PERFORMANCE EVALUATION:

Each student must participate in the class discussions of the concepts of silvicultural techniques and the role of precommercial thieneral preparations for work, including adjustment of the harness and suspension eyelet. Fuel mixing and starting procedures must also be discussed by each student. Finally, the concepts involved with strip layout, mapping and piece rate payment methods
